Area Farmers place Iowa State Fair Llama Show

Jennifer Olson of Corcoran, Minn., captured Best of Show honors in the 2014 Iowa State Fair Llama show held August 16. The winning llama was selected from Grand Champion females and males in the Light Wool, Medium Wool, Heavy Wool, Sliky Wool, Suri Wool, Non-Breeder and Miniature divisions. Simmental Cattle Show brings awards to Atkins, Blairstown,Walker winners

Owen Brothers Cattle Company of Bois D’Arc, Mo., was awarded the Grand Champion Purebred Bull banner in the Simmental Cattle show judged August 16 at the 2014 Iowa State Fair. Reserve Grand Champion Purebred Bull honors were awarded to Schick-Haefner Cattle Company of Clinton, Ill. The Iowa Champion Bull was exhibited by Sherrie, Bradley and Ashl Moores Simmental Farm of Rose Hill while Springer Simmentals of Cresco was awarded the Reserve Champion Iowa Bull banner.

Webster Farms of Walker places multiple times in Angus Show at Iowa State Fair

Mike Wells of Wishing Well Angus in Columbus Junction was awarded the Grand Champion and Iowa Champion Bull banners in the Angus Show judged August 12 at the 2014 Iowa State Fair. The Reserve Grand Champion Bull was exhibited by Robin Younge of Ventura. Norris Farms of Corydon exhibited the Grand Champion Female. The Reserve Grand Champion Female was shown by Johnson Corner Cattle of Fort Dodge while Megan Collison of Rockwell City was awarded the Iowa Champion Female honors.

Baby news: Mona Lee Sysouchanh

Nikone and Georgia Sysouchanh of Waukee happily announce the birth of their daughter, Mona Lee, on Monday, August 25, 2014 at 7:13 am. Mona weighed 7 lbs 2 oz and was 18.75” long. Mona joins her sister, Annie, age 2. Grandparents are Dr. Brian and Linda Meeker, Vinton, and Vone Douangdy & Khamfone Sysouchanh, Hanover Park, IL.

Garth and Pat Beatty celebrate 50th Anniversary

Happy Anniversary to Garth and Pat Beatty, who are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on September 5th.  Their  family includes three sons -  Dan (Michelle), Matt (Kris), and Mark (Mary); and one daughter - Sarah (Mike) Dahl.  They have also been blessed with 7 grandchildren.  They celebrated their Golden Anniversary with a family trip to San Diego.

ISU summer term graduates include area students

Iowa State University awarded a total of 832 degrees at the end of the 2014 summer term. Of the students receiving degrees, 500 were awarded undergraduate degrees, 222 master's degrees and 110 doctor of philosophy degrees. Of the students receiving bachelor's degrees, 52 graduated "With Distinction" (cum laude, magna cum laude or summa cum laude).

NCCC Cedar 3 at the Toledo botanical garden/Toledo Grows

Cedar 3 member Emily builds a brick path for the herb garden at Toledo GROWS By: Louise Powell, Cedar 3 AmeriCorps NCCC team Cedar 3 is serving with the Toledo botanical garden/Toledo Grows in Toledo Ohio The team is assisting with various aspects of the Toledo botanical garden/Toledo Grows harvesting crops, removing invasive species and weeds. So far, Cedar 3 has harvested crops such as Bell Peppers, cumbers and much more.

AmeriCorps NCCC Class 20 Corps Member Spotlight: Shannon Ubel

Shannon Uble, from Flemington, New Jersey is a corps member for Maple 1 in AmeriCorps NCCC Class 20. She arrived in Vinton on February 11 to start her 10-month service term working with a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Maple 1 is made up of eight people from across the country and they will serve together around the Midwest. When asked why she decided to serve in the NCCC program, Shannon says, “I enjoy volunteering and making a difference in people's lives.

AmeriCorps NCCC Class 20 Corps Member Spotlight: Kristi Smith

Kristi Smith, from Vancouver, Washington is serving on team Oak 1 in AmeriCorps NCCC Class 20. She arrived in Vinton on February 11 to start her 10-month service term. Oak 1 is made up of ten people from across the country who will serve together around the Midwest. Kristi says” I really wanted to try something completely different from what I am used to while being able to help others.
